The Skilled Worker Visa: A Step-by-Step Guide for 2026

The UK Skilled Worker visa remains one of the most popular routes for individuals looking to build a career in the UK. However, the rules and salary thresholds change frequently, and the Home Office is strict about documentation.

As IAA Level 1 advisers, we guide clients through this process daily. Here is what you need to know before you apply.

1. The Core Requirements

To apply, you must have a job offer from a Home Office-approved employer (a licensed sponsor). The job must be on the list of eligible occupations and meet the minimum salary requirement, which is updated regularly by the government.

2. The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)

Your employer must issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship. This is an electronic record, not a paper document, and it contains a unique reference number you will need for your application. It is crucial that the details on this CoS match your passport exactly.

3. Proving Your English Language Skills

You will usually need to prove your knowledge of English. You can do this by passing an approved English language test (usually at B1 level), holding a degree taught in English, or being a national of a majority English-speaking country.

4. Financial Evidence

You may need to show that you have enough personal savings to support yourself when you first arrive in the UK, unless your employer is certified to cover this for you.
